Australia passport New Zealand

Do Australians need a visa for New Zealand?

No visa needed.

Visa free

You can board a flight to New Zealand on a passport from Australia with no visa. The officer on arrival sets how long you may stay. Immigration will still want to see a return ticket, somewhere to stay, and enough money for the trip.

There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay.

Book your flight. Any site offering to sell you a New Zealand visa, permit or "travel authorisation" for this trip is selling you something you do not need.

If you are travelling on a different passport, New Zealand's official entry rules are at immigration.govt.nz.

What New Zealand asks for

  • Copy of your passport, valid at least 3 months after you plan to leave New Zealand
  • One acceptable photo
  • Proof of funds of at least NZD $1,000 a month (NZD $400 if accommodation is prepaid), or a sponsor
  • Proof of your plans in New Zealand
  • Proof you can leave New Zealand at the end of your stay
  • Police certificates, chest X-ray or medical examination, if asked for
  • English translations of any documents not in English

Worth knowing

  • Paper applications for the Visitor Visa are no longer accepted. Apply online.
  • Request an NZeTA only through the official NZeTA website or app. The app is cheaper than the online form.

How long it takes

Processing is busiest between September and March. Immigration New Zealand recommends not booking non-refundable travel until the visa is approved. An NZeTA can take up to 72 hours.
