You must apply and be approved before you travel. The government charges €60. Airlines will refuse to board you without it, and applying takes time — start well before you book anything you cannot change.

What Ireland asks for
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave
- Application summary sheet from AVATS, signed
- Two colour passport photographs taken in the last six months
- Bank statements for the last six months, showing your own funds
- Evidence of employment, study or business ties in your home country
- Travel medical insurance for the length of the stay
- A letter explaining why you are travelling and who is paying for the trip

Worth knowing
- Ireland is not in the Schengen area. A Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland, and an Irish visa is not valid for the Schengen countries.
- Unofficial agents charge several times the government fee to fill in the same AVATS form.
